Buying and Selling Websites
Buying and selling property is okay; and cars are fine too, but surely not websites. Have we actually reached a point in the technological timeline when real estate (or virtual estate perhaps?) on the internet is considered an almost as good as real property? By the looks of things, that time is still not here yet, but we’re approaching that day pretty quickly. Soon the worth of an individual will not only include his house, his car, and all his physical investments, but also the number of websites he owns. You see, a website is like a home on the net. It has its own address, a mailbox through which people can contact the owner, and in this age of web 2.0, it even has its own interior designer! Websites are now like hot property, and naturally, website real estate is skyrocketing. There are already plenty of ‘brokers’ on the net, who offer websites for sale or purchase, and making a killing. Australia is no different. Website brokers and resellers are popping up all over the place. In a few years, it’ll be a full-fledged profession, and those who rise to the top will end up raking in as much as the best real estate agents. Just like how homes in Sydney and Melbourne are worth much more than homes in the countryside, the value of websites also depends primarily on the amount of traffic they draw and the advertising rates that they command. Busier is better. One of the earliest website transactions to draw the attention of the media was that of Sabeer Bhatia’s Hotmail.com which was bought by Microsoft for 400 million USD. This was over ten years ago! Since then, it has been clear that website selling and buying has been no small matter. A lot of young entrepreneurs and website owners are now jumping into the business of reselling websites. It is a simple concept. Buy a small not-so-popular website for as low a price as possible. Then re-design it, optimize it for search engines and run the site for about one or two years. During that time, increase its popularity and make it advertiser-friendly, and its value shoots to two to five times its value. Now sell the website and start working on a new project. Scores of Australian bloggers and entrepreneurs are now investing a bit of their time in website design and brokerage. Over the years, they build up their expertise and start working on a few websites alongside their regular job. All they need is one good trade, and it could fetch them enough to quit their job and continue to sell or buy these websites for a living. The start is slow – it requires a lot of time and not-so-much money to learn the basics, but once the foundation is laid, the rest becomes a lot easier. Like any business, however, the internet business industry is extremely susceptible to market trends and fluctuations. However, with an ever-increasing market, and potential clientele from all over the world, the potential is practically limitless!
